  2.                     STATMASTER DESKTOP DEMOGRAPHICS SYSTEM

  4.  QUICK START
  5.  To start StatMaster, type the two-letter state code for the state you
  6.  unzipped, then press the Enter key.
  7.  
  8.  StatMaster requires an IBM PC-compatible computer with a hard drive and
  9.  640K of RAM.  A mouse is optional.
  10.  
  11.  WHAT IS STATMASTER?
  12.  StatMaster is a fast, dense, and easy-to-use database for demographic, econo-
  13.  mic, and geographic statistics.  This data comes from the latest "County and
  14.  City Data Book" which is published by the Bureau of the Census every five
  15.  years.  Registration brings you the latest available 1990 Census Data from
  16.  P.L. 94-171.  Each state version provides an average of 18,000 statistics.
  17.  Versions for each state and a 50-state version (StatMaster Professional) is
  18.  available.  CyberSoft distributes all 50 individual state versions as share-
  19.  ware.

  21.  The Bureau of the Census version of this data is available on CD-ROM with NO
  22.  DATABASE MANAGER.  StatMaster Professional contains more data than the CD-ROM
  23.  version, it requires only 2.7 Mbytes of hard disk space, and it provides the
  24.  full-featured StatMaster database manager.

  26.  P.L. 94-171 Census Data will be available in this format by late 1991.

  28.  DOCUMENTATION FILE DESCRIPTIONS
  29.  StatMaster is intuitive.  You probably won't need to read any documentation
  30.  to use StatMaster competently.  If you find yourself having difficulties,
  31.  try stepping through the brief tutorial.  To discover all the features of
  32.  StatMaster, peruse the Alphabetical Reference Guide.  Here are the doc files
  33.  you should be aware of:

  35.  * PL94-171.DOC ..... Information regarding the 1990 Census of Population and
  36.                       Housing: P.L. 94-171 Data.  This product contains decen-
  37.                       nial census data down to the Census Block Level.
  38.  
  39.  * REFERENC.DOC ..... An Alphabetical Reference Guide for StatMaster users.
  40.                       Useful for answering quick questions about StatMaster.
  41.  
  42.  * STATS.DOC ........ A listing of the statistics contained in StatMaster.
  43.                       This list contains 352 different statistics that Stat-
  44.                       Master provides for 14,000 U.S. locations.

  46.  * TUTORIAL.DOC ..... A Tutorial for using the major capabilities of Stat-
  47.                       Master.

  49.  NOTE TO BBS SYSOPS
  50.  There are 50 BBS state versions of StatMaster.  Each BBS state version of
  51.  StatMaster is stored as a ZIP file.  The name of each file is "SM-xx.ZIP",
  52.  with "xx" representing the two-letter postal state code for the state that
  53.  is represented.

  55.  To keep descriptions across BBS's as consistent as possible, you may wish to
  56.  use a file description similar to:

  60.  INSTALLING STATMASTER 
  61.  To install this program: 1) create a directory, 2) log onto this directory,
  62.  3) unZIP the SM-xx.ZIP file into this directory.

  64.  After the files have been extracted, type the two-letter state code for the
  65.  state you unzipped, then press any key to get to StatMaster's Main Menu.  The
  66.  tough part is now behind you.

  68.  REGISTRATION AND UPDATES
  69.  Registration brings you the ability to save target areas, the latest 1990
  70.  Population and Housing data (taken from P.L. 94-171), and the ability to ex-
  71.  port all data and text to word processors, spreadsheets, databases, graphics
  72.  presentation programs (like Harvard Graphics or Lotus Freelance), and mapping
  73.  software (like Harvard GeoGraphics).
  74.  
  75.  Registration and ordering information is listed under the "Information" head-
  76.  ing in StatMaster's Main Menu.

  78.  P.L. 94-171 DATA TO BE RELEASED IN LATE 1991
  79.  Cybersoft will publish the 1990 Census of Population and Housing: P.L. 94-171
  80.  Data, complete with data down to the block level, in late 1991.  This data
  81.  will include all the data contained in the ten CD-ROM's available from the
  82.  Bureau of the Census.  Single-state versions of this data will be available
  83.  on floppy disks.  CyberSoft will publish this data on a single CD-ROM, com-
  84.  plete with the StatMaster database manager.  (The Bureau of the Census pro-
  85.  vides a data viewer that allows users to look at data for one location at a
  86.  time, but provides no capability for ranking data, for displaying data from
  87.  more than one area at a time, or for conducting Boolean AND searches.)
